What vehicle-to-load means, how an EV or hybrid might power a few devices in an outage, and the safety rules, including garages.
- Vehicle-to-load support varies by model, so check the owner manual first.
- Keep a battery or fuel reserve for the vehicle itself.
- Never run a gas vehicle in a garage or with a blocked tailpipe.
An electric vehicle has a big battery sitting in your driveway, so it is natural to wonder whether it can keep the fridge running in an outage. Some can, in some ways, and many cannot. The answer depends on the exact vehicle, and the owner manual is the only reliable place to find it.
This guide explains the terms, what is realistic, and the safety basics for any vehicle used during an outage.
What vehicle-to-load means
You will see a few similar terms. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) means the vehicle supplies power to plug in devices, either through an outlet on the vehicle or through an adapter. Vehicle-to-home (V2H) means the vehicle feeds a home through special equipment installed by a qualified electrician. Vehicle-to-grid sends power back to the grid and is a different thing again.
Not every electric vehicle supports any of these. Some hybrids and plug in hybrids include outlets that run off the traction battery or the engine, and some do not. Do not assume. Look for a section on external power or power export in the manual, or contact the dealer.
What you can realistically power
With V2L, you may be able to run lights, a laptop, phone chargers, a small appliance or a router. Look at the outlet's maximum output in the manual and compare it with your devices using the method in our generator sizing guide. Add up running watts and remember motors need extra to start.
Running power from the vehicle also uses the driving battery, so treat it as fuel you may need for evacuating or getting to a charger. Many drivers keep a reserve for the vehicle itself, and some vehicles stop output at a set battery level.
Safety rules for using any vehicle
- Follow the manual, use only the specified adapters, and never modify wiring or plug into a wall outlet to back feed a home.
- For V2H, use only equipment and installation approved by the vehicle maker and done by a licensed electrician, with the right transfer equipment.
- Keep cables out of water and snow, and protect connections from rain.
- Do not leave kids or pets in a parked vehicle, particularly in hot or cold weather.
Gas and hybrid vehicles in an outage
If you use a vehicle's engine to charge phones or warm up, do it outdoors with the vehicle in the open. Keep the tailpipe clear of snow, since a blocked exhaust can send carbon monoxide into the cabin. Open space and clear exhaust are not optional. See our carbon monoxide safety guide and winter car emergency kit.
A car phone charger or a 12 volt power outlet can charge devices in small amounts. A power bank is often a better, quieter choice for phones. See power banks for outages.
Keep your car ready for the outage
- Charge the vehicle or fill the tank before a storm if you can, and stay above half when possible.
- Know where public chargers or fuel stations are, but expect them to be affected by outages too.
- Keep a printed map and a cash reserve in the glove compartment.
- Keep a basic kit in the car: blankets, water, snacks, flashlight, first aid and a phone charger.
How it compares with a power station
A dedicated battery power station is made for backup use, is portable, and does not take away from your transportation. A vehicle can offer more stored energy but less flexibility and more safety questions. If you want a plug and play option, start with our power station sizing guide and the power stations hub. Many households use both: a power station for essentials and a vehicle as a spare charging source when the manual allows.
Quick answers
Can any electric car power my house?
No. Only some models support vehicle-to-home, and it needs approved equipment installed by a licensed electrician.
Can I plug a fridge into my EV?
Only if the vehicle supports power export, the outlet can handle the fridge's starting load, and the manual allows it.
